StarSteer 27, released in September 2026, adds the features geoscientists have asked for most. It imports GeoGraphix, Petra, Kingdom, and Petrel projects, brings in shapefiles with their attributes, locks data against accidental overwrites, and accepts tops in TVDSS. The release also rebuilds the 3D view and adds object tree tools for large projects.

In this ROGII University session, Milton Smith, Technical Sales Analyst at ROGII, demonstrates the most impactful updates on projects in Texas, the Permian Basin, and Oklahoma.

What's new in StarSteer 27, presented by Milton Smith, Technical Sales Analyst at ROGII.

Key Takeaways

  • Third-party project import. The Reference Project tool now reads GeoGraphix, Petra, Kingdom, and Petrel projects, including type wells and grids. A type well can become a well by dragging it into the wells list.
  • Tops in TVDSS. The topset spreadsheet accepts tops in TVDSS as well as MD. A new insert-top menu lists every top in the topset, so names stay consistent across users.
  • Object locking. Curves, folders, wells, grids, and polygons can be locked against accidental overwrites. They can be temporarily unlocked when a corrected survey or log arrives.
  • Map data. Shapefiles import with their attributes and their projection, and raster images can be georeferenced directly in the map view.
  • Large-project tools. The object tree now has sticky parent objects, new grids that start private, labels by API or KB, attribute filters, hide empty folders, and collapse all.
  • Display and correlation. The release adds well attribute pie charts, map comments, contour intervals that adjust to zoom level, and a rebuilt 3D view. Well correlation mode gains Ctrl+Z undo, shared track spacing, and colored correlation lines.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's new in StarSteer 27?
StarSteer 27 adds third-party project import, shapefile import, georeferenced raster images, object locking, tops in TVDSS, private grids, new object tree filters, well attribute pie charts, map comments, correlation panel improvements, and a rebuilt 3D view.

Can StarSteer import Kingdom or Petrel projects?
Yes. Starting with StarSteer 27, the Reference Project tool reads GeoGraphix, Petra, Kingdom, and Petrel projects, so type wells and grids can be brought into a StarSteer project directly.

Can tops be entered in TVDSS in StarSteer?
Yes. In StarSteer 27, the topset spreadsheet accepts tops in TVDSS as well as measured depth.

How do you prevent accidental overwrites in StarSteer?
StarSteer 27 can lock curves, folders, wells, grids, and polygons. A locked object can be temporarily unlocked for a set time to load a corrected survey or log.

Can StarSteer import shapefiles?
Yes. Dragging a shapefile onto cultural layers imports it with its attributes. StarSteer reads the projection file and matches it to the project's coordinate system, and the attributes can be used for mapping and calculations.
