This case study examines how StarSteer's GeoAssist and machine learning technology have revolutionized geosteering in Eagle Ford's Yosko Unit 4H, enhancing accuracy, efficiency, and streamlining drilling operations.
In the fast-paced and complex world of horizontal drilling, geosteering accuracy and efficiency are pivotal. Traditional geosteering methods, which rely heavily on manual interpretation, can be time-consuming and challenging, especially when dealing with multiple wells and unexpected geological complexities. However, advancements in machine learning and automation are transforming this landscape.
In this case study, we explore how StarSteer's GeoAssist and machine learning technology have revolutionized geosteering in Eagle Ford's Yosko Unit 4H, providing a more accurate, efficient, and streamlined approach to drilling operations.
The Eagle Ford Shale is a significant geological formation located in Southeast Texas. It has been known as a world-class source rock for many years but has recently transformed into a world-class oil reservoir. The geological structures of the Eagle Ford require precise navigation within narrow windows with specific properties such as high Gamma Ray, Low Water Saturation, High Young's Modulus, and High Porosity to target the sweet spots in the reservoirs using lateral wells.
In the Eagle Ford reservoir, the traditional geosteering method uses stratigraphy and model-based techniques and requires manual interpretation in real-time, taking a minimum of about 20 minutes for a skilled geosteerer to analyze and adjust the wellbore trajectory. This manual, time-intensive process becomes challenging when drilling multiple wells simultaneously or when unexpected geological complexities arise.
ROGII implemented StarSteer's ML-based GeoAssist to automate geosteering. This solution allowed for an accurate and confident second opinion on the geosteering interpretation, streamlined drilling operations, and maximized the efficiency of horizontal drilling.
The table below describes the benefits and limitations of each interpretation method.
Are you working in an unconventional setting with high complexity and requiring multiple wells to be geosteered simultaneously? or Are you interested in having access to a second opinion to add confidence to your interpretation in real-time or post-drilling?
